History of the Beekman 1802 Mercantile (now known as the Beekman 1802 Kindness Shop)Updated 2 years ago
Here’s the story of a world-famous Mercantile in the middle of nowhere:
The Beekman 1802 Mercantile is located at 187 Main Street in Sharon Springs NY. The Mercantile was built around 1860. Initially built to be a Mercantile, the structure was located at the other end of Main Street. When the store went out of business, the building was purchased by the Village of Sharon Springs. The village used the location as the main municipal building for the village through the early 1990s. It housed the fire department, library, court and jail---all at the same time.
Brent and Josh purchased 187 Main in 2012 after winning the Amazing Race. They did a complete renovation with the idea that a good retail experience could bring people into town similar to the way L.L. Bean or Stonewall Kitchen bring people into their small towns.
After some renovations in the Spring of 2022, the Beekman 1802 Mercantile had been renamed the Beekman 1802 Kindness Shop. Beekman 1802 is founded in kindness, as a single act of kindness is what created the ripple of Kindness that started it all. Neighbor by Neighbor, that ripple of kindness continues on.
The Beekman 1802 Kindness Shop is open daily from 10am through 6pm and is the host to thousands of Neighbors that visit the small village with a population of 532.
